Top 5 Sports Related Songs Of All Time

Top 5 Sports Related Songs Of All TimeMusic is a lot like sports.  There are underdogs. There are champions.  There are twists and turns and then there is the soundtrack.  The songs, just like the plays on the field, demonstrate feats of achievement, bravery and, if the stars align, signal victory .  They can leave you in utter euphoria or can completely crush you.   The following five songs are my choices for top 5 songs about sports.  They exhibit all of these characteristics.

5.  “Centerfield” by John Fogerty
Any list regarding sports just wouldn’t be right if it didn’t include this song.  “Put me in coach, I’m ready to play”.  This is the sentiment of many young bands climbing the ladder towards their illusive dreams.  Just give me one shot coach, I’ll prove we’re good.

4.  The University of Nebraska Fight Song: “There is no place like Nebraska”

Ok, it is no secret that I LOVE Nebraska Football.  Hell, this band is named because of Nebraska football.  There is nothing better to me than spending a Saturday afternoon with my parents and their friends (all over the age of 65) having a few beers and eating tacos at a local watering hole while cheering on our favorite team every week.  I mainly like this song so much because they play it every time they score.  Who doesn’t like to score?  The greatest line here though is “where the girls are the fairest and the guys are the squarest.”  Well then call me a square and ship me to Lincoln.  Go BIG RED!

3.  “The Super Bowl Shuffle” by The 1985 Chicago Bears

How can you go wrong with Walter Payton, William “The Refrigerator” Perry, Jim McMahon, Mike Singletary, and Willie Gault on the same team?  How can you go wrong with Walter Payton, William “The Refrigerator” Perry, Jim McMahon, Mike Singletary, and Willie Gault in the same music video.  Peaking at number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100, this rap has been emulated by teams ever since.  A truly dominating performance by a dominating team.

2.  “I Wish” by Skee-lo

I love the underdog.  Who hasn’t once wished they were a little bit taller, or wished they were a baller?  This song champions the little man’s quest to gain mad skills and get the hot chick.  I wish I was baller!

1.      “Cubs in Five” by The Mountain Goats

The Chicago Cubs are an AMERICAN INSTITUTION.   No team has suffered a painful stretch from the famed curse of the billy goat to the infamous Steve Bartman foul ball.  This song brings hope to all Cubs fans.  It brings hope to all Americans.  Someday, the team will ignite in an epic fashion and beat every team in the league.  My only request is that when the Cubs finally win the series, they invite John Darnielle to sing this at Wrigley Field and retire his number forever for keeping the hope alive.

You can purchase a CD or buy concert tickets from The 1984 Draft here.
