GUEST BLOG: Solve A Problem & Start A Business

Haulix_LogoHave you ever experienced something and thought, “There has got to be a better way to do this?”

Next time that happens hold onto that thought, because solving the problem could turn into a full time business.  It’s safe to say, if you solve a problem you are having, others could benefit from that solution too (and pay you money for your solution).

It doesn’t even have to be a huge problem.  You could find a small piece of a larger process that is slightly flawed and improve it with a business.  Back in 2001, I started a music-reviewing website.  For years, I had to hire someone to enter promotional CDs into our database. I would go to our post office box and after I would turn that key, I would always quickly move my hand in front of the box as I opened the door because packages would overflow out.  After doing the same thing over and over again for 8 years, that question rang in my head, “There has got to be a better way to do this.”  What if there was a way that publicists could easily distribute promotional media to the press that was faster, more efficient, less expensive and icing on the cake, it would protect their music from leaking?  It was from that initial epiphany that Haulix would eventually be born – a web-based system used for pushing music out to the press at the pre-release stage.  That was somewhere in 2009.  Fast forward to now and our system has been used to promote everyone from Clutch to the Backstreet Boys to Journey, and thousands of other artists.

You younger people grew up with technology – embrace it!  There’s a lot of people out in the workforce still doing things the “old way” —which is the only way they know. When it comes to the music industry and technology, they go hand in hand.  To start a business, you don’t need a fancy degree from Harvard.  You don’t have to wear a suit and you don’t need millions of dollars in funding.  Hard work and a lot of passion for what you are doing will go a long way.  Don’t dwell on the notion of having the perfect golden idea or who your competitors are either.  Build a great service or product that helps other people get what they need to do done and say goodbye to that cubicle at the dead-end job forever!
