After the release of their brutal EP Rise From Treason, The Resistance are back with their first full length album release, SCARS. Made up of ‘heavy weights’ of the Swedish metal scene; to say this band is experienced is an understatement.
As it is their debut LP release, you would expect a bit of fumbling around between tracks, looking for their “signature” sound, but this is not the case. The album is solid from the opening line “fire in the hole!” to the last melodic riff leading out .
The album has an old-school death metal sound, with little hints of melodeath and hardcore scattered throughout. Each song is an explosion of fast paced mayhem from start to finish. The intensity that is held throughout the album is impressive; you can almost feel the anger in every song.
The drumming style that Barkensjö brings to the band is made up of an onslaught of double kick, huge symbols and some really intense rolls (probably best represented at the start of the album’s title track “Scars”). With over 20 years of experience Strömblad brings in his immense knowledge of guitar and love for metal, not to mention Ljungström’s. Using this they produce deep lead and rhythm sections that can’t be listened to quietly. As for the vocals, they are raw and angry, that’s all you need to know really.
Overall a highly anticipated album that was well worth the wait. Do not hesitate to buy this album; metal fans will not be disappointed.
The Resistance consists of:
Jesper Strömblad – Guitar (former In Flames)
Glenn Ljungström – Guitar (former In Flames)
Marco Aro – Vocals (former The Haunted)
Chris Barkensjö – Drums (former Carnal Forge)
